The Malverne Educational and Fitness Foundation (MEFF) committee met to discuss the Malverne 5K annual run/walk for education. We are celebrating our 10-year anniversary. The 5K run and kids fun run will take place on October 19th. This year again, we’ll coordinate with other 3 community runs and form the Southwest Nassau Run Series. We had a positive response from the running community after the inaugural Series last year. Runners/walkers admitted the Series kept them active for a longer period of time. The sponsors also liked the fact they received a larger exposure. Their message went to approximately 1,500 participants.
This year, the Inwood 5K run will open the Series on October 12th. Weekend later, it will be Malverne, followed by the Five Towns Community Chest 5K on October 26th. Fly with the Owls 4-mile run will close the Series on November 15th. When is a good time to start preparing? Now. If you need a stronger motivation, perhaps enrolling your kid in the OLL Malverne CYO cross country team and running along will help. Their practices will start in July.
In search for an optimal location, we’ll use a different and longer course for the kids fun run. We’ll also make the day-of-run registration process more straightforward. Please, consider helping, if you don’t register as a runner/walker. Last year volunteers (listed here) can apply for their free entry to the 5K. We’ll keep the registration fee at the same level and offer more perks for registrants.
We are considering investing in a portable speaker system powerful enough to last the entire run and to render pleasantly the voice of the anthem singer. We’ll make sure the mile markers and water stations are on the course and water also at the finish area.
As is the tradition, we’ll announce the T-shirt design contest. So plan ahead to either submit your design, or participate in evaluation of designs. The author of the design selected for this 10-year anniversary 5K run will receive $100.
To conclude this initial information I would like to mention Bill Benson’s 1-mile bash that will take place on June 22nd at the Hendrickson park in Valley Stream to celebrate his 95th! birthday and also an upcoming run a friend, AIDS and cancer survivor organizes in Baldwin on June 29th—the 5K AIDS Cancer Run Walk. You can register here.
We are looking forward to see you running/walking our 5K run or the whole Series. The proceeds of this event fund completely or partially youth programs in our tri-community.

P.S. I apologize for the test message some of you received last week—technical glitch.
