Let’s open with a news that will shock the running community. (Aside from the death of the LI legendary runner, Bill Benson, who passed away in July). We confirmed from two independent sources that Fly with the Owls 4-mile, (FWO run) won’t take place this year. The venue’s website is still up but doesn’t offer any further details. The FWO run and Malverne 5K were my favorite. I was able to just open the door and get out to the start line without having to drive. It couldn’t get any better. I ran my first Fly with the Owls in 2007. The fact that we lost a member of the Southwest Nassau Run Series, contributed to our decision to cancel the series. Hopefully, this year’s hiatus will energize a group of enthusiasts who will renew the run in years to come. We invite you to help our team this year and we’ll help you build your run next year.
Medals, photos, registration
Now updates on the Malverne 5K and fun run. We are considering to create custom medallions displaying our logotype instead of ordering generic ones. Something similar to this digital interpretation. What do you think?
As in previous years, the Malverne Educational and Fitness Foundation (MEFF) invites artists to participate in the 2016 T-shirt design contest. See the contest rules and information below. Since the public received well the bright t-shirts last year, we’ll use the orange color as the base again.
Photographer, Maryellen Lawless, took few photos at the 2015 Malverne 5K run and kindly shared them with us. And we share with you. We welcome all contributions, or links, and not only from professionals.
We upgraded the online registration. It is open AND we are hosting the application process on our site. We added two new categories: Parent & Child (18 or under), and Male & Female. We collaborated with our timers creating these categories. They’ll have to deal with tracking and combining times of the team members. You can sign up for a team competition online only. It’s the only way to assure that team members will be paired correctly in the system. When registering you’ll look for a feature called “team competition.” Select which of the team competitions you want to participate in and name your team. We think the teams could bring some fun for family participants. And don’t worry, if your “other” team member holds you back, you are still eligible for an award in your age category.
Request for proposal for a 2016 T-shirt design
The MEFF is a non-profit organization supporting educational and fitness programs in the Malverne Union Free School District, NY. One of the foundation’s fundraising activities is the organization of a 5K run/walk in October. Each year, the MEFF asks artists to submit a T-shirt design related to the 5K run. The public votes on submissions and the artwork that has received the most votes is selected. The contest is open to any artist who agrees with the following rules.
The artwork must be original, use 1 color that will stand out on the orange T-shirt. It must be suitable for the traditional screen print (no gradients). The artwork will incorporate the following text: Malverne 5K, 2016. The design will be printed on the front of the shirt.
Rules and Timeframe
Please, submit the artwork in 500×500 pixels .jpeg format to Jan Kasal, MEFF president and contest coordinator using the Contact tab above. Use the same contact, if you have additional questions. Deadline for submissions is by 8 p.m. (ET) on September 12, 2016. We will display all the submissions (jpeg) on this website. Runners, their families, and friends will evaluate the artworks and their votes will determine the winning artwork. We’ll announce the results on this website on September 20, 2016, and ask the author of the winning artwork to provide the artwork via email in editable Adobe Illustrator file format with text converted to outline. The artwork will become a property of the MEFF and we reward the author with $100. The artists are welcome to resubmit their artwork that was not selected in previous years.
You can review designs from previous years.
