Let’s start with weather. The forecast is favorable. Cooler fall morning, no rain. Excellent conditions for running! There are two parking lots next to the Malverne HS (school East of Ocean Ave). The registration and bib pick up is located upstairs in the gym. We improved the information “system”. We looked around how bigger races organize registration and created table-mounted signs. Follow the sign according to your last name, if you preregistered. There will be abundant number of registration slips for those who waited till the last minute—and a separate desk to accept the registration slips.
The fun run has changed its location yet again. (Eyes rolling). It will take place at 8:30 on Wicks Lane. Upon multiple requests from community we added a pee wee micro run that will follow immediately after the fun run which is now for older kids. Both fun runs will finish at the start of the Malverne 5K run. Derrick Adkins, 1996 Olympic gold medalist in 400 m, Lakeview resident, will take the kids to their start and sound the fun run off.
Bria Hydrick, Malverne school district student, will sing the Anthem. The Malverne 5K run will start at 9:00 after the opening ceremony. The mile increments will be marked by feather flags. Water will be available at the start, mile 2, finish, and the HS gym. There will be volunteers at each course corner cheering on the participants. The water station at mile 2 will be manned by the girl scouts. The run couldn’t happen without volunteers. Please, wave at them AND bystanders as well while running by.
We remeasured the course and updated the mile markers. The U-turn on Langdon Blvd will be delimited by orange cones and the run official will stand by. The preliminary results will be posted on the timer’s trailer. The award ceremony and raffle will take place in the HS gym. The event is organized in order to raise funds for youth programs. Therefore, our thanks go to all sponsors. They are listed on the website.
To conclude, we want to remind that the run is a USATF sanctioned road runners event where bikes, roller skates, and jogger’s strollers are not permitted. Parents may walk with strollers at the end of the crowd.
Thank you all who participate in this 10th edition of the Malverne 5K run and wish you a pleasant experience.
